Riga Christmas Market 2022

From the end of November until the beginning of January, Riga is busy with Christmas markets and celebrations. The main Riga Christmas market is on Doma Laukums, the historic main square, while the other is not far away on Livu Laukums. There is even another smaller Christmas market on Esplanade Park in front of the Orthodox Cathedral that is worth visiting. Dome Square (Doma laukums) is in the middle of the Riga old town.

This historic site hosts the Old Riga Christmas Market. While you will find a number of other Christmas markets around town, this one is by far the most famous and sought after in Riga. So past Saturday we dressed up warm, braved the cold weather(it was -7 Degrees Celsius) and visited two Christmas markets.

White Christmas is always special in Latvia and a great experience.

Along with having multiple markets, Riga is one of the most affordable winter break destinations in Europe with many things to do around the city.

It’s worth noting that Riga is believed to be the first city in the world to put up a decorated Christmas tree back in 1510. Like most Christmas markets you can expect to buy handmade clothing, gloves, scarves, and beautiful ornaments.

Riga Christmas Market dates: 27th November 2022 to 2nd January 2023.

Opening times: 10am to 8pm and until 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays.

Closed Christmas Day.

Location: Doma Laukums (Town Square), Livu Laukums and Esplanade Park.

Reason to visit: interesting Latvian traditions.

Specialties: Gluehwein(warm wine), Grey peas and bacon, hand carved kitchen utensils(and much more)
